Khan's Tale

The soothing sound of the waterfall echoed across the jungle. Clear, cool waters flowed down a snaking river that split near the lower edge of the island. Resting with his back half in the water, the komodo was starting to calm back down as the water rippled over his scaled hide. Kahn kept his eyes closed as his tail gently swayed in the water. Arms were crossed as his head was settled down upon his arms.

A small crack was heard, coming from someone stepping on a fallen twig. It was not far off, so the noise made him open a solitary yellow eye. He didn't bother to move from his spot, rather since he had recently eaten and didn't care to see. His tongue flicked out to test the air and when it returned into his maw, he knew there was no danger. From the smell, he could tell is was only a buck that came down to graze. Eyes closed as he simply yawned with his serrated fangs gleaming with salvia before closing his jaws.

Kahn allowed the buck to approach, but smirked as he heard it stop. "Oh don't worry, I've already feasted today," he said before opening his eyes to look at the buck. His tongue flicked out and that was enough to make the buck flee in terror.

"I enjoy seeing the herbivores run," chuckled Kahn. He lifted his head and then pushed up with his powerful front limbs so he could stand on his hind legs. The water trickled down his dark brown hide as he left the water. His tail was last to leave the water. With a flick of his tail, the water cracked when it slammed down.

Stretching out, he glanced down at his body and nodded his approval. Turning, Kahn headed back down the path that led to his den. Even without his acute sense of smell, he knew the way there. Too bad none of the other animals, besides his clan members, knew this path was also his hunting trail.

Easily moving through the forest, he used his tail to slam into the nearest tree so the crack would alert his clan members of his arrival. Of course, he just did that to show off his power as all of the clan knew his scent traveled on the wind.

Kahn was smiling inwardly when a female approached him, with her head dipped. "Ah, hello sister," he said to the female with delight. All clan members were brother and sister to him. A way to keep peace among ranks.

"Greetings brother," replied the female. She lifted her head and nuzzled his chin gently. "Am I to assume your bath was relaxing?"

"Very good. I did also see a buck, but he fled as soon as I spoke!" Kahn laughed and did not see one of the younger males was crouched nearby. He was too busy to notice.

The female nuzzled Kahn again as he gently tickled under her chin. "Sister Dawn, has the clan had their fill of food for the month?" he gently asked.

A nod came from Dawn. "Yes. Everyone has eaten, so none will need to eat until the new moon arises. But," she hesitated in her next words. Even looking away, but Kahn lifted her head up.

"But what?"

"It...it is nothing brother."

This would not settle well with Kahn as he let go of Dawn's chin, but as soon as he did, a tail slammed into his leg. Bellowing in surprise, he fell to the ground in a pile of dust. Barely able to even roll to his belly, he felt the weight of the young male press down on his body.

A hiss escaped the young male as his yellow eyes glared down into Kahn's. "It is my turn to lead the clan!" he yelled as he tried to slash as Kahn.

"Never!" barked Kahn as he pulled his head over his neck so the top was hit by the talon instead. Growling, he got his foot under the younger male and kicked him off. Quickly, he got to his feet and snarled. He remained on all fours as his opponent rolled onto his own feet.

Eyes narrowed as they started to circle one another. The rest of the clan, including Dawn, had to stay out of the fight. It was the rules set by the Myths as none could intervene in the fights. "Your a fool, Kahn," growled the young male.

A bark of a laugh escaped Kahn. "Me, a fool?" he said with a smirk. "I'm not the fool who challenges a leader, who is in his prime. You are the fool here."

That only enraged the young male, but that was Kahn's plan. As soon as the former charged, Kahn moved quickly to slam his tail into him. A loud snap was heard when the tail struck, sending the male skidding into the ground for a few feet.

Moving slowly over, his tongue flicked out to test the air. Pity, thought Kahn, this young drake would of made a fine mate for a female. Only if he wasn't so reckless. He then snorted and lowered his head down to the male.

"You've lost," stated Kahn. He could easily see that when his tail hit, ribs were broken. With a tongue flick, he tasted the air again. "Leave and only return with the new moon, if you can."

He turned then walked back to Dawn and his clan. Kahn stood tall and bellowed to show he was still the clan leader. Only a slight head turn was given as the young male painfully got to his feet. He snorted seeing that there was defeat in the beaten male's eyes. Even as the male limped off, Kahn continued to watch.

"Raze will die out there. You must allow him to stay with the clan," pleaded Dawn.

"No!" snapped Kahn. "He is a fool for trying to challenge me. Raze may not return to this clan until the new moon. It may be a miracle if he survives, but even the Myths know they cannot help him. They approved my rule, and even they must obey the laws."

Taking a deep breath, Kahn blew out. "Come sister, I need you to tend to this wound on my muzzle." He then got onto all fours and entered the tunnel to his den.

A last glance was given in the direction in which Razz had left, but there was no sign of him. Dawn shook her head and then followed her mate into the tunnel to treat his wounds.
